Western crowned pigeon – a stunningly beautiful bird, now classified as endangered
The crowned dove is considered as one of the most beautiful birds in the world.
This is a unique creation. The bird is bright, graceful and stunning!
It has bright blue feathers and a beautiful crest on its head. The bird can grow to the size of an average turkey.
The body length of the pigeon is from 66 to 74 cm, the weight is about 2.5 kg.
This species lives mainly in the northern part of New Guinea and on the nearby islands of Biak and Yapen. The crowned pigeon looks similar to pheasants – it mainly walks on the ground, and can jump at the lowest branches of trees in case of danger.
These birds feed on fallen fruits, seeds and berries, sometimes they eat snails and small invertebrates.
The pigeons live in pairs and usually incubate one, and in rare cases, two eggs.
They build nests at a height of 6-10 meters above the ground. Parents incubate the baby in turn, the female at night, the male – during the day.
The mating dance of those pigeons is very beautiful – the males arrange a whole performance by making loud sounds similar to the sound of a drum.
Now the western crowned pigeons are classified as endangered because of poaching and habitat destruction. Birds are not afraid of people, which makes it quite easy for poachers to catch them after which their beautiful plumage is sued for decorating souvenirs …
Now these are very rare birds…
