A few days ago Jolie Mejía and her family along with her dogs visited Punta Negra – a seaside community in Peru, which was near their home. It was along a rocky shore when they came to learn a story of true friendship & devotion.

A random dog approached Jolie and her family and who appeared to be all by himself along the shore.

“He didn’t seem abandoned. He wore a ribbon around his neck and his fur was clean,” Mejía said. “I pet him, waiting for his owner, but minutes passed and no one came.”

The dog started playing with Jolie’s  pets, but all the while his gaze remained fixed upon the ocean. This did not go unnoticed by Jolie and she soon learned the touching reason behind that gaze.

Locals were walking in the seaside, so Jolie approached one of them t inquire about the dog. She’s been thinking of adopting the dog who was so playful with her pets.

“He explained that practically everyone in the area knows the dog and is very fond of him,” Mejía said. “He told us that the dog’s owner was a fisherman who passed away some time ago, and that the dog comes to the beach every day and stares out to sea.”

The dog, it seems, has been awaiting the return of his owner for a year and watching out for him daily ever since. The dog’s story is  well-known by the locals and they feed him, shelter him and provide him with health care when he needs it. His name is Vaguito.

But though the dog’s owner may never return, the dog isn’t without friends who care for him – Jolie was among many who wanted to adopt Vaguito touched by the bitter story behind his gaze into the ocean.
